SUMMARY:Resilient Landscapes Workshop: Landscape Maintenance in the Defensible Space
DESCRIPTION:Maintenance of our landscape is the most important step in keeping your property and neighborhood fire-wise and sustainable. \nLearn more about how to create and maintain a fire-wise\, sustainable garden that supports biodiversity while meeting County code requirements. \nPruning\, irrigation\, mulching\, composting and other maintenance techniques will be covered. Also\, what to do on Red Flag Warning Days. \nWe will focus on sustainable practices for spring in the landscape. \nThis workshop will allow plenty of time for questions\, and will provide: \n• Recommendations for fire-wise landscaping in the 0-5’\, 5-30’\, and 30-100’ defensible space zones\, with specific plant design and maintenance suggestions. \n• Practical ways to reconcile the sometimes conflicting guidelines\, to achieve a beautiful\, biodiverse\, energy-saving and water- and fire-wise landscape. \n• Proper maintenance techniques such as pruning\, irrigation\, mowing\, composting and mulching. \n• A practical understanding of what it means to be sustainable in an ever-changing California climate. \n• Resources for how to move forward with your landscape. \nWorkshop creators and presenters include: Jennifer Roberts: Environmental Education Specialist\, Landscape Designer\, UC Master Gardeners & Habitat Corridor Project Mimi Enright: Program Manager\, UC Cooperative Extension Master Gardener Program of Sonoma County April Owens: Executive Director\, Habitat Corridor Project; Horticulture Chairperson\, CNPS-Milo Baker Chapter \nThis workshop is available in English and Spanish. \nWhen: \nApril 9th\, 2024 \n5:30 pm-7:00 pm \nWhere: \nFree virtual workshop via Zoom. \n\nRegister HERE!

SUMMARY:Resilient Landscapes Coalition Workshop: Within and Beyond Defensible Space
DESCRIPTION:Presented by the Resilient Landscapes Coalition including presentations by Roberta Macintyre\, Caitlin Cornwall & Eric Schoohs. \nHosted by The Upper Mark West Fire Safe Council. \nDiscover how you can make your home and the landscape beyond it fire resilient with a science-based approach including: \n\nStructural Hardening\nHabitat Friendly Defensible Space\nVegetation Management Beyond Defensible Space\n\nAgenda: \n9:00 am-9:30 am: Structural Hardening: Presented by Roberta MacIntyre \nPrepare for wildfire and harden your home now to protect it from the RED! Radiant heat from nearby burning plants or structures\, embers from a wildfire\, and direct flame from a wildfire or burning neighboring home. Taking the necessary measures to harden (prepare) your home can help increase its likelihood of survival when wildfire strikes. This presentation will discuss Low-Cost Ways to Harden Your Home\, such as installing noncombustible gutter covers on gutters to prevent the accumulation of leaves and debris in the gutter; caulking or plugging gaps greater than 1/8-inch in siding and decking; and installing 1/8-inch mesh screens\, or ember and flame-resistant vents\, at attic and underfloor vent openings. \n9:30 am-10:00 am: Defensible Space within the 0-100 FT: Presented by Sonoma Ecology Center  \nWe draw upon the latest research and expertise to collect landscape design and maintenance practices that create beauty and ecological benefits while also being fire-wise. We will discuss defensible space principles and how to strategically select and place CA native plants. Our focus is helping residents and professionals create and maintain fire-wise landscaping that enhances wildlife habitat\, conserves water\, and sequesters carbon. \n10:00 am -12:00 pm: Defensible Space beyond the 100 FT: Presented by Caitlin Cornwall & Eric Schoohs \n*Will include a short hike! \nThis portion of the workshop will allow plenty of time for questions\, and will address: \nHow to tailor treatments to chaparral\, oak woodlands\, and conifer ecosystems\, fuel management practices for maintaining complexity and fostering biodiversity\, discussion of special considerations for sensitive species and waterways\, treatment options\, and biomass management options besides hauling or chipping.
